Year for Census Queries is the academic-year selection used by SIRAS CALPADS Historical Estimates. It tells SIRAS which historical period to use when building an estimated Fall 1 or EOY 4 population from archived SIRAS records.

How the Historical Estimates Work

| Fall 1 | SIRAS searches for the most recent archive occurring from July 1 of the academic year through the Fall CALPADS census date, using Active status only. This is intended to identify the most recent archived IEP record effective for the Fall census period. |
| EOY 4 | SIRAS searches for the most recent archive occurring from July 1 through the end of the academic year. The estimate includes Active records and Inactive records whose Inactive Date falls within the academic year. |
Why the SIRAS Count May Differ from CALPADS
SIRAS historical estimates use archived record history within the SIRAS database. The resulting population may differ from CALPADS because enrollment timelines and what was actually reported at a particular point in time may not be completely represented by the SIRAS archive set.
For that reason, a SIRAS historical estimate should not automatically be treated as an official historical head count.
Use the applicable official CALPADS certification/reporting source. Use SIRAS Historical Estimates when you need to reconstruct or research a historical SIRAS population.
Improving a Historical Estimate
When the estimate needs to more closely represent who was actually enrolled during the historical period, compare the SIRAS candidate population with enrollment data from the same time frame.
